ClipSonic is a desktop app where the local path is a real option, not a marketing line. Transcription can run through Whisper on your own GPU. Highlight detection can run through a local model via Ollama. Reframing and rendering are always local, through ffmpeg. Put those together and you have a local AI video editor that works on a plane, in an air-gapped edit bay, or anywhere you don't want a video leaving the building.
Every stage, and whether it needs the internet
You choose a provider per feature in Settings, and you can mix local and cloud however you like. The fully-local configuration below needs no API key and no connection after the models are downloaded once.

A private video editor by construction
When you pick the local models, there is no step where the video file or the transcript is sent anywhere. There's no account requirement to edit, no telemetry on your footage, and no cloud copy to delete later. If you use a cloud AI provider for convenience, only the transcript text is sent to rank moments — the video itself still never moves.

Common questions
Can ClipSonic run completely offline?
Yes. With local Whisper for transcription and a local model via Ollama for highlight detection, the whole pipeline — transcribe, find clips, reframe, caption, export — runs with no internet and no API key. Only downloading a YouTube URL needs a connection.
Does my video get uploaded?
No. Reframing and rendering are always local. With local AI models nothing is sent at all; with a cloud model only the transcript text is sent, never the video.
Is this a private video editor?
Yes — with the local configuration there is no step that transmits your footage or transcript, no account needed to edit, and no cloud copy.
Do I need a powerful computer for offline mode?
Local transcription is fastest with a GPU; on a CPU-only machine it still works, just slower. Rendering runs on any modern Windows or Mac machine.
What has to be downloaded first?
The Whisper model (once) and, for local highlight detection, an Ollama model (once). After that, no connection is required.
Can I still use cloud AI if I want to?
Yes, per feature. Mix local and cloud however suits the project.
